Kampfgruppe SonBae The window was there...a gap in the lines at Hampshire and the road to London was open. If only an armored column could blast its way through an American Armored Rifles Company, the 5th SS Wiking could will a stunning victory for the Fatherland and send the Allies into total confusion and Whitehall and Number 10 Downing Street are directly threatened. Hopefully the refugees that will be streaming northward will only add to the confusion. Mission is No Retreat at 1750 points for the Germans and 1500 for the US. |

| SonBae 5th SS Wiking |
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: The Americans set up the Priests and both Armored Rifle Plts on board with an ARP on each objective. No units held in ambush. SonBae 5th SS Wiking: The Germans form an Armored fist with the intent to punch through the village to the bottom objective. If only we don't get hung up in the hedges and village. |
TURN 1
Steel Rain claims a victim |
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles | SonBae 5th SS Wiking
|
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: Red Leg6 this is Redleg 31...Fire Effect TRP1....Time on Target 1305 hrs.
Hunker down and drop artillery SonBae 5th SS Wiking: The SS move out to close the distance to the objective an take potshots at the dug in infantry...to no avail. There is a strange sound overhead and dread sinks in as an AOP is spotted and 105mm shells begin falling on the 2nd Plt (PzIVHs) and one bails and another brews up!....not an auspicious start. |
TURN 2
Forward! |
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles | SonBae 5th SS Wiking
|
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: Red Leg6 this is Redleg 31...Fire Effect TRP2....Time on Target 1310 hrs. SonBae 5th SS Wiking: The Americans are content to sit in their foxholes and wait for the tanks...and we will oblige. The wheat fields slow movement enough so that the tanks begin bunching up as the exit the village. Some more potshots and hits are being made, but the US fortifications are saving them. The AOP flies away as the AA tracks move up and a sigh of relief is felt amongst the men and then we hear a sound of trains as more 105mm fall on the tanks. There must be a ground based FO.....there he is in amongst the southern ARP. Right where we are headed. |
TURN 3

Link2Edition US Armored Rifles
| SonBae 5th SS Wiking
|
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: Steady boys here they come!!!!! Unleash hell with the bazookas! when the dust clears....the tanks are stopped short of the attack. For the moment at least SonBae 5th SS Wiking: The force continues and again potshots and artillery....finally the tanks are in reach to launch an assault....Just prior the Americans lose a bazooka team...YES! The PzIVHs from 3rd plt go in. But wait, 4 bazooka teams pop up and shoot One tank brews up and a second bails out. The assault is stopped! And then more arty falls. One the far side of the field a Stuart platoon shows up...and begins moving up the road to turn the flank! |
TURN 5
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles
| SonBae 5th SS Wiking
|
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: Tanks are in the wire!!! Wait they last one is running away!
In the middle of the battlefield the Hellcat Security section heads up the road. SonBae 5th SS Wiking: The tanks form a gun and begin a slow grind to shoot the infantry out of the positions as the 2nd Plt PzIVHs moves into assault., but are still out of range. The Command group begins a flanking maneuver around section of woods. And the 3rd platoon takes its remaining 2 tanks and goes into assault again. One tank bails in defensive fire but the assault goes on! The platoon leader goes in and scores a kill!!!! and the Americans breakoff. YES!!!! But wait the platoon is leaving the field. He failed his platoon morale check! |
TURN 6
HELLCATS claim a victim as does the Arty |
HELLCATS are no more |
What is that behind the Stuarts? |
Oh crap!!!!! HS129B (disguised as a Typhoon) |
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles
| SonBae 5th SS Wiking
|
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: HELLCATS attack and claim a Panther....but what is that coming in behind the Stuarts.....oh CRAP!!!! INCOMING!!!!! SonBae 5th SS Wiking: More shots at the infantry and 2nd Platoon assaults and kills a team but the Americans breakoff. A beautiful site! The HS129B is back and head for the Stuarts. Several loud booms are heard from overhead and we see smoke coming from where the Stuarts are....2 dead and 1 bailed! All guns focus on the Hellcats....the Command section takes out 2 and the rest of the tanks bail a third and the Hellcat platoon withdraws. |
TURN 7
Assault! |
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles
| SonBae 5th SS Wiking
|
Link2Edition US Armored Rifles: The other ARP begins to move to support the 1st platoon...and Armored Recon Section and Remaining Stuarts flies down the road to take out the remaining AA track. SonBae 5th SS Wiking: The HS129B returns and finishes off the Stuarts! The remaining PzIV platoon goes in to assault the 1st ARP...survives the defensive fire and kills a stand....but the ARP counterattacks and the bazooka teams swarm a PzIVH and take him out...the tanks go in again and MISS! the ARP finish the remaining tank and the platoon is gone. Remaining Panther platoon go in. The ARP is on the verge of breaking...one more kill will do it. An infantry stand goes down, but the 2 panthers are taken out. Will the ARP hold!!!! Yes, a brave sergeant is seen rallying the men forward. The Command section sees the 1st ARP regroup and he 2nd ARP starting to cross the road and decides discretion is the better part of valor. |
Command says other groups found a weakness and are pushing vehicles forward. We will head back and pick up our reserves and surge forward again towards London. Surely they have nothing that can get to us in time.
As I gather the reserves and move out towards to London I see movement in the distance. I grab my binos ...drop them and yell to the men. Move out! American Tank Destroyers ahead! We have to get into position fast! Great game....Michael did a great job with his arty. The slow going for the wheat fields slowed me up enough and made me bunch up that the arty had a field day. HS129B didn't do much when I had multiple planes, but when I had 1 die to call in planes with and only had 1 plane show...they devastated the Stuarts. Now can we slip by the Tank Destroyer company that is approaching the Salisbury plains before us? Didn't this area used to be used as their tank training grounds? We shall see how much they have learned from them. |
